About this position

This internship opportunity is a collaboration between the Adelaide Graduate Research School (AGRS) and SA Nano, a University of Adelaide spin-out company focused on developing next-generation microfluidic technologies for synthesising lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and personalised mRNA medicines. SA Nano aims to democratise nanomedicine research by providing scalable, user-friendly, and cost-effective solutions for researchers, enabling seamless transition from benchtop studies to clinical-scale production. Their flagship devices, NanoGo and NanoGo Neo, are designed to make advanced nanoparticle synthesis accessible to laboratories worldwide.

The role is tailored for a motivated and ambitious PhD student in the early stages of their studies (within the first 18 months of candidature) who seeks hands-on experience in laboratory experimentation and early-stage product development in a dynamic start-up environment. The internship is unpaid but offers flexible scheduling to complement academic commitments, and eligible candidates may receive scholarship support from AGRS. Key responsibilities include assisting with experimental work on lipid nanoparticle formulation for drug delivery, operating and developing microfluidic platforms, handling and processing mRNA samples for encapsulation studies, maintaining accuracy in data recording and analysis, contributing to experimental design and troubleshooting, presenting findings to team members, supporting laboratory workflow development, and participating in start-up team discussions.

Desired skills include a research background in LNPs for drug delivery, microfluidic experience, mRNA handling and characterisation, strong organisational and communication skills, and a creative, driven approach to problem-solving. The internship offers exposure to advanced nanomedicine research, direct involvement in cutting-edge start-up projects, mentorship from experienced researchers and entrepreneurs, and a collaborative, fast-paced environment. Eligibility requirements specify current PhD enrolment at the University of Adelaide in a relevant field, satisfactory progress, and research alignment with the internship project. The minimum duration is 60 FTE business days.
