About this position

The University of Alicante is seeking applications for a PhD Junior Researcher to join the University Institute of Applied Physics for Science and Technology, collaborating on the funded research line in Planetary Sciences. The initial project, titled “INTErnal stRucture, impACt effecTs and orIgin of near-Earth asterOids explored by plaNetary defence Space mission,” focuses on the geomorphological interpretation of the Didymos binary asteroid system (65803) using data from ESA’s Hera mission. This position is ideal for candidates interested in planetary geology, asteroid surface analysis, and space mission data interpretation.

The successful candidate will work within the Department of Physics, Systems Engineering and Signal Theory, contributing to the analysis of rocky planet surfaces and small solar system bodies. Tasks include geomorphological interpretation, data analysis, and collaboration with teams involved in planetary defense and space exploration missions. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in planetary geology, geomorphological studies, and prior participation in space mission teams. Knowledge of English and experience with geological processes and resources are advantageous.

Applicants must hold or be in the process of obtaining a PhD in Geology, Geological Engineering, or a closely related field (Spanish MECES level 4 or EQF level 8). Candidates with foreign qualifications must provide official approval or comparability documentation. Additional requirements include Spanish nationality or legal residency, proficiency in an official language of the Valencia Region, and a medical certificate of physical and mental fitness. The selection process involves a test, merit-based assessment, and an interview, which may be conducted in English.

The position offers a full-time contract (37.5 hours/week) with a gross monthly salary of €2,157.70, plus extra payments as per regulations. Funding is provided by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities-Spanish State Research Agency and co-funded by ERDF-EU. The contract is subject to the receipt of project funding.
