About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology is part of the REACT Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network, focusing on the development of an advanced emulation framework for self-aware neuromorphic system-on-chip (SoC) architectures. The project aims to create energy-efficient compute-in-memory (CiM) architectures using gain-cell memory for real-time edge learning, addressing critical challenges in power consumption, latency, memory bandwidth, and reliable fault detection. Neuromorphic systems, inspired by the computational principles of the human brain, promise ultra-low-power intelligent processing through event-driven computation, on-chip learning, and CiM paradigms that minimize data movement between memory and processing units.

The PhD candidate will develop an FPGA-accelerated emulation framework to enable fast and accurate exploration of emerging hardware and learning paradigms. This framework will support rapid prototyping, automated design-space exploration, and cross-technology benchmarking, providing valuable insights into the co-design of learning algorithms, memory technologies, and neuromorphic hardware architectures for future edge-intelligent systems. Key research objectives include designing energy-efficient, adaptive, and scalable neuromorphic SoC architectures, integrating CiM technologies, and investigating security mechanisms for neuromorphic and AI accelerators, such as side-channel resistance and secure on-chip learning. The candidate will implement, validate, and benchmark architectures using simulation environments and hardware prototypes, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams across artificial intelligence, circuit design, computer architecture, and embedded systems engineering.

Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in The Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before recruitment and must not already possess a doctoral degree. A Master’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering with excellent grades is required, along with knowledge of Digital/Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuit (IC) design, Computer Architecture, HDL (Verilog, VHDL), scripting languages (Python, TCL), and experience with commercial EDA tools (Cadence/Mentor Graphics). Knowledge in neuromorphic architectures and low power IC design is a plus. Candidates should demonstrate a research-oriented attitude, initiative, strong problem-solving skills, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, motivation to develop teaching skills, and fluency in spoken and written English (C1 level).

The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), including a year-end bonus (8.3%), annual vacation pay (8%), pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, high-quality training programs, excellent technical infrastructure, on-campus children’s day care and sports facilities, unlimited access to the TU/e Student Sports Center, commuting and home-working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) for international candidates.
