About this position

Cardiff University is advertising two fully-funded PhD positions in the Bishop Traits Lab, led by Tom R. Bishop (Lecturer in Ecology and Zoology). The research areas are Physiological Entomology and Ecological Entomology, with co-supervision from Dr Lucy Alford at the University of Bristol. These projects are competition funded by NERC GW4+ or BBSRC, and successful candidates will receive a stipend, tuition coverage, and support for training and conference travel.

The Ecological Entomology project focuses on investigating long-term changes in mountain insect populations in southern Africa, addressing the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. The research involves fieldwork collecting community data, lab work estimating behavioural and physiological traits, and collaboration with universities in South Africa (Cape Town, Pretoria, Venda, KwaZulu-Natal). The student is encouraged to shape the direction of the project and will be based in Cardiff, with secondary supervision in Bristol.

Applicants should have a strong background in biological sciences, ecology, zoology, or related fields. The programme is in-person, and students must be based at the host institution in the UK. International applicants are welcome but must provide appropriate documentation. Part-time study options are available for home students. Applications must be submitted through the SWBio DTP centralised system, and only those submitted by the deadline will be considered. The selection process values diversity and inclusion, and reasonable project adaptations are supported.

For more information, visit the project links or contact [email protected]. The application deadline is December 3, 2025, for a September 2026 start.
