About this position

PhD opportunity in Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

The project is based in Dr Caroline Ross’s group in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, with links to interdisciplinary research in structural bioinformatics and computational biology.

Research themes include gene regulation and protein interaction networks dysregulated in the brain, as well as protein-protein interactions in fungal pathogens with emphasis on stress adaptation, antifungal resistance, and transcriptional regulation.

Possible project methods include structural modelling of protein-protein and protein-RNA interactions, molecular dynamics simulations, transcriptomics, regulatory network analysis, AI-driven computational biology, and integrative multi-omics analysis.

The call particularly encourages applicants with strong quantitative or computational backgrounds, especially in computer science, mathematics, physics, statistics, or computational biology. Experience with programming, Linux/HPC environments, machine learning, or structural modelling is recommended.

Funding may be available through NRF bursary funding via the NRF-grant holder linked funding stream, including NRF-CSUR or NITHeCS Centre of Excellence.

Interested candidates should contact Dr Caroline Ross at [email protected].
