About this position

PhD Opportunity (Fall 2026) at West Virginia University in Trustworthy AI for Cyber-Physical Systems.

The position is being recruited by Onat Gungor, who is joining the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The new lab will focus on building machine-learning methods that are scalable, secure, reliable, and trustworthy for real-world, high-stakes cyber-physical environments.

Research areas include trustworthy AI for CPS, adversarial machine learning, robustness, safe AI systems, efficient AI for edge and real-time environments, robotics and autonomous systems, V2X, collaborative driving, and foundation models for robotic and embodied AI.

Funding is fully provided and includes a competitive stipend plus health insurance coverage.

Preferred background: Machine Learning / Deep Learning, Systems, Security, Networking, strong programming skills (Python, PyTorch, etc.), and prior research experience.

Eligibility note: due to current constraints, only US-based applicants can be considered for Fall 2026.
