PhD Opportunity in Vector-Borne Diseases: Entomology, Virology, and Mosquito-Virus Interactions (Belgium) Ghent University in Belgium

Sciensano, in collaboration with Ghent University, is offering a PhD opportunity for a junior researcher in the field of vector-borne diseases. The doctoral project, titled “JAPORISK,” focuses on monitoring the mosquito species Aedes japonicus in Belgium and assessing its vector competence for West Nile virus and Usutu virus under current and changing climatic conditions. The research combines fieldwork, laboratory experiments (BSL-2/BSL-3), data analysis, reporting, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications, culminating in a PhD from Ghent University.

The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in bio(medical/engineering) sciences or veterinary medicine, with a strong interest in entomology, virology, and mosquito-virus interactions. A valid driver’s license is required, as well as proficiency in French or Dutch, with English as an additional language. The position is based at Sciensano in Ukkel/Brussels, Belgium.
