About this position

Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence in Germany is advertising a PhD or Postdoc position (m/f/d) in Behavioral Neurobiology within the Neural Mechanisms of Natural Behavior Research Group. The project is HFSP-funded and investigates the neural mechanisms of avian biosonar behavior, with a focus on how birds process somatosensory and auditory information during echolocation.

The research combines behavioral monitoring, cutting-edge wireless technology, extracellular neuronal activity recording, and vocalization analysis in freely flying birds. A major scientific goal is to test whether facial feathers in oilbirds (Steatornis caripensis) function as high-frequency sound sensors. The position is based in Seewiesen, Southern Bavaria, Germany, with extended field research in Colombia.

PhD applicants should hold an MSc degree in biology, neuroscience, psychology, cognition, ecology, evolution, or a related field, and show a genuine interest in neuroscience and behavioral ecology. Postdoc applicants should hold a PhD in neuroscience or a closely related field, have well-documented expertise in in-vivo electrophysiology, and demonstrate a strong publication record.

Additional desirable experience includes neurophysiology, bioacoustics, monitoring animal behavior, neuroanatomy, programming, and electrical engineering. The team is described as young, collaborative, and international, with strong emphasis on communication, problem-solving, and field-based research.

The appointment is full-time and fully funded for 3 years, with remuneration according to E13 TVöD (65% for PhD and 100% for Postdoc) and full health and social insurance coverage. The institute also offers training in academic, technical, and career development skills, conference participation, and access to advanced research infrastructure.

To apply, send a single PDF by email to Dr. Susanne Hoffmann containing a one-page motivation letter, CV with publication list, one-page research experience summary, and contact information for at least two referees. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
