About this position
Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence is recruiting for a PhD or Postdoc position (m/f/d) in Behavioral Neurobiology within the Neural Mechanisms of Natural Behavior Research Group. The project is HFSP-funded and investigates the neural mechanisms of avian biosonar behavior, with a focus on how birds process somatosensory and auditory information during echolocation.
The research combines behavioral monitoring, wireless technology, and simultaneous recording of extracellular neuronal activity and vocalization behavior in freely flying birds. A major scientific goal is to test whether facial feathers in oilbirds (Steatornis caripensis) function as high-frequency sound sensors. The work is multidisciplinary and sits at the intersection of neuroscience, behavioral ecology, bioacoustics, and animal behavior.
The position is based in Seewiesen, Southern Bavaria, Germany, with extended field research periods in Colombia. The team is described as young, collaborative, and international, and the institute offers access to state-of-the-art tools and exceptional research infrastructure.
PhD applicants should have an MSc in biology, neuroscience, psychology, cognition, ecology, evolution, or a related area, plus a genuine interest in neuroscience and behavioral ecology. Postdoc applicants should have a PhD in neuroscience or a closely related field, documented expertise in in-vivo electrophysiology, and a strong publication record. Additional desirable experience includes neurophysiology, bioacoustics, animal behavior monitoring, neuroanatomy, programming, or electrical engineering.
The appointment is full-time and fully funded for 3 years, starting 1 December 2026 or later. Compensation is based on E13 TVöD with 65% for the PhD and 100% for the postdoc, plus full health and social insurance coverage. The institute also mentions training in academic, technical, and career development skills and opportunities to attend international conferences.
To apply, send a single PDF by email to Dr. Susanne Hoffmann including a one-page motivation letter, CV with publication list, one-page research experience report, and contact information for at least two referees. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
