The University of Bergen, a leading European institution, is offering a three-year PhD position at the Centre for Cancer Biomarkers (CCBIO), Department of Clinical Medicine. This opportunity is part of the project “Cancer-neuron synapses and behavior of breast cancer,” funded by The Norwegian Cancer Society and Breast Cancer Society (Pink Ribbon). The research aims to investigate whether breast cancer cells form synapses with peripheral nerves and how these interactions influence tumor behavior.
The project utilizes advanced tissue analyses and experimental cell models. The PhD candidate will be responsible for generating and culturing breast cancer organoids and neurons using stem cell differentiation. The interaction between these cell types will be studied in co-culture systems and characterized through live-cell imaging, transcriptomic and proteomic profiling, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy. Additional tasks include synapse detection, electrophysiological measurements, and ultrastructural analysis by electron microscopy. The position also involves developing 3D imaging technology for nerve and synapse detection in tumor tissue samples, studying the biology of synapses between cancer cells and nerves, and testing synaptic inhibitors in co-culture systems.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in molecular/cell biology, cancer biology, neurobiology, or a related field. Required skills include documented experience with cell culture (preferably organoid cultures or other 3D models), co-culture setups, immunofluorescence/IF staining, and microscopy (especially confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis). Experience with proximity ligation assays, CRISPR/Cas9, single-cell RNA sequencing, mass spectrometry-based proteomics, electrophysiological methods, and machine learning for microscopy data analysis is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate high motivation, problem-solving skills, independence, and collaborative ability. Fluency in oral and written English is mandatory.

The position offers a competitive salary (NOK 570,000; higher for medical/dental qualifications), enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and welfare benefits. The PhD candidate will participate in the University of Bergen’s approved PhD programme, with admission required within three months of commencement. The position is fixed-term and cannot be extended or repeated at the same institution.
