PhD Position: Collective Action, Cohesion and Inequality Utrecht University in Netherlands

This PhD position at Utrecht University focuses on the interplay between economic inequality, social relations, and collective action, using behavioral experiments informed by sociological theory and philosophical perspectives. The project aims to clarify how inequality can both promote and undermine collective action, especially in societal challenges requiring broad participation and long-term commitment. The research will explore causal mechanisms linking resource inequality and social relations to the emergence or breakdown of collective action, situating findings within philosophical debates about the value of (in)equality and its relationship to community.

As a PhD candidate, you will develop and test theories on the dynamics between inequality, social cohesion, and collective action. Theoretical frameworks will be formalized, including game-theoretical models, and enriched by normative philosophical perspectives. Empirical work will primarily involve behavioral lab experiments, with flexibility for other methods as the project evolves. You will learn to combine theory-driven empirical sociology with philosophical approaches, derive hypotheses from deductive reasoning, and develop strong skills in experimental methods, data analysis, and critical thinking. The position offers the opportunity to grow into an independent scientist and contribute to a collaborative, interdisciplinary research environment within the Department of Sociology, the SOCION consortium, and the interuniversity research school ICS.

SOCION addresses societal fragmentation, focusing on how social cohesion is threatened by polarization and erosion between communities. The consortium brings together psychologists, social historians, demographers, philosophers, and sociologists, collaborating with civic organizations to generate insights into connections between individuals, groups, and institutions. The project aims to identify new pathways and forms of social cohesion, contributing to sustainable societies and citizen well-being.

Applicants should have an MA or MSc degree in sociology or a closely related field, with interest in philosophy and social cohesion. Familiarity with philosophy is preferred, along with strong quantitative social science skills, including experimental methods. Programming skills, especially in Python, are recommended. Candidates should be team players eager to participate in an inter- and transdisciplinary research community. Professional competence in English is required. The position is for one year, with extension to four years upon successful assessment, offering a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, flexible employment terms, and professional development opportunities.
