About this position

The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture at Nord University, Norway, is offering a three-year PhD position in the Ecology Research Division, focusing on the detection of ecosystem regime shifts using remote sensing and deep learning. This doctoral fellowship is at the intersection of technology and nature protection, aiming to apply advanced deep-learning methods to recognize and predict shifts from open heathland to closed forest along the Norwegian coastline. The project addresses the expansion of unplanned forests dominated by invasive conifer species, which threaten biodiversity, cultural landscapes, and the safety of coastal communities. By investigating the complex feedback processes driving landcover change, the research aims to contribute to the protection of these world-renowned but vulnerable landscapes.

The successful candidate will be based in Steinkjer, Trøndelag, Norway, and will join a creative and collegial working environment with flexible hours and access to an active university sports team. The position is scheduled to commence on 1 January 2027, or another mutually agreed date. The annual salary for doctoral researchers is NOK 550,800, with additional benefits through the Government Pension Fund, including loans, insurance, and pension advantages.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in ecology, natural resource management, remote sensing, or a related field, with documented education in the ecology of boreal ecosystems. A minimum grade of B or better (ECTS scale A-E) is required for admission to the PhD program. Candidates must have experience analyzing remotely-sensed image data in a nature management context. Experience with machine learning, particularly image segmentation and convolutional neural networks, is strongly advantageous, as is experience in flying drones for image data collection. Good written and oral English skills are required, and the thesis may be written in English or Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language). A driving licence valid in Norway is also required. Candidates who already hold a PhD degree are not eligible.

Applicants will be ranked based on their master’s study theme and perspectives, project outline and implementation plan, motivation for doctoral work, relevant research experience, ability to work independently and systematically, and personal suitability. Employment is conditional upon admission to the faculty’s doctoral program, with the final project outline to be approved within three months of appointment. Termination may be considered if admission is not obtained within this deadline or in cases of insufficient progress.

Nord University is committed to diversity and encourages applications from candidates with disabilities, gaps in their CV, immigrant backgrounds, and other diverse life experiences. The university may conduct background checks as part of the hiring process, especially for candidates with connections to countries identified as key threat actors by PST.

To apply, submit your application electronically by 15 May 2026 via the provided application link. Required documents include an application letter, CV, diplomas and certificates, master’s thesis, project description (3-5 pages), progress plan, reference contacts, and any other relevant documents as PDF attachments. Applicants with education from outside Scandinavia must provide witnessed diplomas in both the original language and authorized English translations, and those from outside the EU/EEA must submit HK-dir approval of their master’s degree. After the application period, a list of applicants will be published, and in special cases, applicant identities may be made public.
