About this position
The University of Twente invites applications for a PhD position focused on developing new quantitative methods for evaluating multi-disease diagnostic tests. As healthcare rapidly adopts tests capable of identifying multiple diseases from a single blood sample or medical image, there is a pressing need for robust frameworks to balance early detection benefits against the risk of false positives. Existing methods for single-disease tests do not adequately address the complexities of multi-disease diagnostics. This PhD project, part of the MERIT initiative, aims to fill this gap by creating and validating quantitative appraisal methods that will guide policymakers and physicians in making informed decisions about the adoption and use of these novel tests.
The position is based within the Health Technology and Services Research (HTSR) section of the Faculty of Behavioural Management and Social Sciences (BMS) at the University of Twente. HTSR is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 35 researchers dedicated to advancing health innovation through quantitative analysis, decision-making support, and implementation strategies. The research environment is collaborative, with opportunities for personal and professional growth, and includes partnerships with Amsterdam UMC and Radboudumc. The project will build on existing evaluation methods for single tests, extend them to multi-disease contexts, and apply them to AI-driven radiology case studies.
Applicants should have, or soon obtain, a quantitative master's degree in Health Economics, Econometrics, Technical Medicine, Industrial Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Applied Mathematics/Statistics, or Computer Sciences. Experience with statistical or mathematical modeling and programming (preferably in R or Python) is required. Candidates should enjoy interdisciplinary work and possess strong communication skills in English. Dutch language proficiency is not required but is an advantage. International applicants must provide proof of English proficiency (IELTS ≥ 6.5, TOEFL-iBT ≥ 90, or Cambridge CAE-C/CPE certificate) if their prior education was not in English.
The position offers a four-year contract, with a qualifier in the first year and flexible work arrangements. The salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 per month, with additional benefits including an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, a solid pension scheme, generous leave hours, free access to campus sports facilities, and parental leave options. The successful candidate will participate in a tailored training programme through the Twente Graduate School, developed in consultation with supervisors Prof.Dr. Erik Koffijberg and Prof.Dr. Mariska Leeflang. The University of Twente is committed to diversity, inclusion, and providing reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities.
To apply, submit your application via the provided link, including a cover letter (max 1 page A4), CV with courses and grades, publications (if applicable), and up to three references. Applications are reviewed as received, and the vacancy will close once a suitable candidate is found or by July 5, 2026, at the latest. For further information, contact Prof.Dr. Erik Koffijberg ([email protected]) or Prof.Dr. Mariska Leeflang ([email protected]).
