About this position
The GEOSHIELD project, hosted at CNRS and funded by the MITI-CNRS 80PRIME program, offers a PhD position focused on the development of multifunctional geopolymer materials for radioactive waste conditioning. The research aims to create a new generation of low-carbon mineral materials that integrate both waste confinement and radiological shielding functions, addressing the challenges of conditioning complex radioactive waste.
The PhD candidate will work on designing and characterizing geopolymer-type materials capable of incorporating contaminated sludges and dense shielding fillers, ensuring long-term durability and robustness. Key scientific objectives include developing robust formulations with radioactive waste and functional fillers (such as heavy oxides), characterizing microstructural heterogeneity and interfaces, analyzing material behavior under coupled thermo-hydro-mechano-chemical (THMC) conditions, evaluating transport properties and leaching mechanisms, and studying scale-up and material robustness for pre-qualification of new waste conditioning matrices.
The research will be conducted at the Subatech Laboratory in Nantes, France, in collaboration with national and international teams. The candidate will adopt an integrated approach linking formulation, microstructure, damage, and transport properties, contributing to the advancement of sustainable waste management solutions.
Applicants should hold or be about to obtain a Master's degree in materials science, civil engineering, geosciences, physical chemistry, or a related field. Preferred skills include experience or interest in cementitious or geopolymer materials, multiphysics behavior of materials (THMC), characterization techniques (microstructure, transfer, mechanics), and experimental and interdisciplinary approaches. Candidates must demonstrate strong motivation, curiosity, independence, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Proficiency in English is required, with the ability to write scientific reports and present results in both French and English.
The position is full-time and temporary, starting on 1 October 2026. Funding details are not specified in the announcement. The application deadline is 22 May 2026. Interested candidates should apply online via the CNRS portal, preparing a CV, cover letter, and academic transcripts. For further information, contact Dr. Tomo Suzuki-Muresan at [email protected].
