About this position
The AMADE research group at the University of Girona (UdG) is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the efficient numerical modelling of composite failure in large structures. AMADE is internationally recognized for its leadership in innovation and scientific excellence, with expertise spanning aeronautical, automotive, nautical, civil engineering, and emerging sectors such as sustainable hydrogen. The group is ranked among the top 2% most cited worldwide and collaborates with leading companies and institutions globally.
This PhD project, in collaboration with Btechc, aims to address the high computational cost associated with modelling failure in large-scale composite structures, such as aircraft and vehicles. The research will focus on developing significantly more efficient numerical methods for crack initiation and propagation, grounded in fracture mechanics. The successful candidate will be responsible for deriving, implementing, and validating novel models, with programming in Fortran required to integrate these models into the team's adaptive modelling framework.
AMADE offers a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment where research has real-world impact. The group’s research lines include simulation and numerical modeling, manufacturing and experimental testing of composite materials, lightweight structure design, 3D printing, cryogenic applications, and sustainability of materials. The position provides opportunities to participate in high-impact European projects and collaborate with prestigious companies, fostering continuous professional development in a stimulating setting.
The PhD grant is for 3 years, with a gross remuneration of 20,000€ to 25,000€. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree (240 ECTS credits) and have completed at least 60 ECTS credits of a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related disciplines. A strong background in engineering, creative and independent thinking, excellent problem-solving and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. Knowledge of numerical modeling, simulation techniques, and experimental testing methodologies is highly valued. For degrees obtained outside Spain, a declaration of equivalence of average grades must be provided. Excellent English language skills are required.
To apply, candidates should complete the online form at https://forms.office.com/e/K5mkdGNJfX and, if applicable, send the declaration of equivalence to [email protected]. Incomplete applications will not be considered. For further information, visit AMADE’s website or contact the group via email. The application deadline is January 10, 2026, and the position is based in Girona, Spain, offering the chance to live in a city renowned for its history, culture, and proximity to Barcelona and the Costa Brava.
