PhD Position: Epistemologies of Automation – Philosophy of Technology, Science, and Artificial Intelligence Erasmus University Rotterdam in Netherlands

The Erasmus School of Philosophy (ESPhil) at Erasmus University Rotterdam invites applications for a PhD position in the context of the NWO-funded project “Epistemologies and Political Economy of Automation,” led by Prof. Dr. Yuk Hui. The sub-project, “Epistemologies of Automation,” focuses on the philosophical history and epistemological foundations of artificial intelligence, automation, and the relationship between intelligence and machines. Key research questions include the historical connection between intelligence and machines in philosophical thought, the epistemological assumptions shaping AI since the mid-20th century, and how re-situating AI within broader philosophical history can inform its future development and critique.

The successful candidate will develop and carry out original research within the scope of the project, aiming to produce high-quality scholarly outputs over the course of the PhD. Responsibilities include engaging with academic and societal partners, contributing to international and interdisciplinary networks, participating in the organisation of conferences and workshops, sharing research findings at academic and public events, and contributing to teaching activities with opportunities to develop inclusive and student-centered approaches.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in philosophy or a related discipline, or equivalent experience, with knowledge in history of philosophy, philosophy of science, and/or philosophy of technology. Interest in automation, artificial intelligence, and robotics is required. Candidates should demonstrate potential for research combining academic quality and societal relevance, and have an interest in philosophical and interdisciplinary teaching with a commitment to inclusive and student-centered learning environments. Effective collaboration, communication across disciplines, and contribution to a supportive team culture are expected.

The position offers excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). The start date is 1 September 2026, based at Campus Woudestein. The contract is for 0.8–1.0 fte, starting at €3,059 per month (P-scale) for a full-time contract, initially for 18 months and extendable to 4 years.
