About this position
This fully funded PhD position at KU Leuven offers an exciting opportunity to join the Research Group of Quantitative Psychology and Individual Differences, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Francis Tuerlinckx. The group is internationally recognized for its productive and collaborative environment, comprising six faculty members and over 30 graduate and postgraduate students. KU Leuven is one of Europe’s top research universities, located in the historic and vibrant city of Leuven, Belgium.
The project focuses on advancing psychological and educational measurement by developing a novel framework for Item Response Theory (IRT) that leverages non-Euclidean geometry. Traditional IRT models rely on latent variables to represent abilities or traits, but these are not uniquely defined. This research aims to overcome this limitation by introducing an arc-length-based approach, where ability is measured as the distance between test takers in a curved model space. This method is mathematically robust and invariant to the choice of latent variable, offering new conceptual and statistical insights into measurement theory.
The successful candidate will work on the mathematical, conceptual, statistical, and computational foundations of this geometry-based measurement approach. The role involves analytical work, coding, simulation studies, and the development of new statistical models. Responsibilities include preparing high-quality scientific papers, developing software, and presenting research findings at national and international conferences. The position is primarily research-oriented, but also requires 120 hours of teaching per year and minor educational duties such as exam proctoring.
Applicants should have a degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, or Behavioral or Cognitive Sciences with a strong focus on mathematics/statistics. Candidates with other degrees demonstrating profound knowledge of statistics, pure mathematics, and programming are also encouraged to apply. Excellent English communication and writing skills are essential. The position offers a competitive salary, excellent research facilities, daily guidance, a conference/travel budget, health insurance, transport costs, and other benefits. The initial contract is for one year, with an expected extension to four years based on performance.
KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The university provides a supportive environment for all students and staff, regardless of background or identity. For accessibility or support questions, applicants are encouraged to reach out via the provided contact email.
The application deadline is May 4, 2026. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews (in person or online) and may be asked to complete a take-home assignment. The expected start date is October 1, 2026.
