About this position

This PhD position at Utrecht University focuses on advancing global soil mapping by integrating process-informed machine learning with mechanistic understanding of soil formation. The project aims to overcome limitations of current empirical machine learning methods by developing novel approaches that incorporate soil processes and data-driven models. As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the Computational Geography research group within the Department of Physical Geography, collaborating with researchers specializing in soil modelling, mapping, and geospatial AI.

The research involves extending machine learning models with process-informed constraints and innovative data integration strategies, targeting high-resolution soil information crucial for predicting ecosystem dynamics under global change. You will also participate in academic activities, including teaching Earth Sciences at Bachelor's and Master's levels, which constitute 20% of your contracted time.

Applicants should possess or be nearing completion of a MSc in statistics, applied mathematics, data science, environmental modelling, geosciences, or a related quantitative field. Essential qualifications include expertise in machine learning (neural networks, transformers), handling large datasets, programming in Python and/or R, reproducible coding, and automated geospatial data analysis. Interest in environmental or soil science applications and hybrid modelling is highly valued, along with strong interdisciplinary collaboration skills and excellent English communication abilities.

The position offers a full-time contract (36–40 hours/week) for one year, extendable to four years upon successful assessment, with the intent to complete a doctorate. Compensation includes a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, partially paid parental leave, and flexible employment terms under the Dutch Universities Collective Labour Agreement (CAO NU). Utrecht University provides additional benefits for professional development, leave, sports, and cultural activities, allowing you to tailor your employment conditions.

The Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University is renowned for its research and education in Earth Sciences, with access to world-class laboratories and high-performance computing facilities. The Department of Physical Geography fosters a vibrant early career community and offers a welcoming environment for new members. Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, provides a dynamic setting with historical charm, modern amenities, and excellent connectivity.

To apply, submit your CV and motivation letter via the university's application portal by 10 May 2026. Interviews are scheduled for 18 and 19 May 2026, with the first round potentially online. International candidates must provide BSc and MSc diplomas and gradelists in English; no reference letters are required initially. Visa/work permit processing for international candidates takes at least four months, supported by the International Service Desk. Housing assistance may be available, but finding accommodation is the candidate's responsibility. For further information, contact Dr. Madlene Nussbaum at [email protected].

Utrecht University values diversity and strives to create an inclusive environment for all staff. Knowledge security screening may be part of the selection process to prevent the transfer of sensitive knowledge and technology.
