About this position

The Computational Atomic-scale Materials Design (CAMD) section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in ab initio many-body theory, focusing on excitons in complex 2D van der Waals materials. This opportunity is supported by a EuroTech Alliance Stipend and features collaboration with the experimental group of Andras Kis at EPFL, offering a unique interdisciplinary research environment.

The successful candidate will develop and apply advanced computational methods based on many-body perturbation theory to investigate exciton dynamics, transport, and exciton-exciton interactions in atomically thin 2D materials, including moiré and heterostructures. The project may also involve contributing to the development of digital data infrastructure for 2D materials (see 2dhub.org), utilizing high-throughput electronic structure computations with the Python-based TaskBlaster workflow framework.

CAMD provides a vibrant, international research setting within DTU Physics, located in the northern Copenhagen area. The group is renowned for developing the GPAW electronic structure code, the ASE Python library, and the TaskBlaster workflow framework, and benefits from substantial computational resources via the DTU-supercomputer facility Niflheim. The department's research spans sustainable energy, materials, quantum technology, and biophysics, with a strong commitment to both fundamental science and societal impact.

Applicants must hold a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent, with excellent academic records in both Bachelor and Master studies. A solid foundation in quantum mechanics and solid state physics is required, and programming experience (especially Python) is preferred. Candidates should be highly motivated, collaborative, and possess strong communication skills in English. Admission is subject to academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme. Applications may be submitted prior to obtaining the master's degree, but enrolment requires completion.

The position is available from 1 February 2026, with a three-year employment period. Salary and terms are determined by the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
