About this position

The University of Bremen is offering a fully funded PhD position in Advanced Ceramics, focusing on solar energy materials and photothermal energy conversion. The doctoral researcher will join the Advanced Ceramics Group within the Department of Production Engineering, working on the development and investigation of plasmonic ceramic open-cell foams for solar photothermal conversion. This research aims to advance solar thermal technologies and support the global energy transition by improving the efficiency of solar thermal systems through innovative materials engineering.

The project is funded by the DFG and involves the fabrication of ceramic foams using alumina or aluminum nitride matrices, combined with surface-deposited or incorporated plasmonic transition-metal nitrides such as TiN, ZrN, and HfN. The foams will be produced via colloidal processing, and the plasmonic nitrides synthesized in situ by magnesiothermic reduction. The research is highly interdisciplinary, combining materials science, mechanical engineering, and solid-state chemistry, and is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fieback’s group at TU Bergakademie Freiberg, who will contribute thermodynamic investigations.

Key responsibilities include the fabrication and synthesis of advanced ceramic materials, conducting independent research, presenting results at conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The successful candidate will collaborate with other doctoral candidates, researchers, and industrial partners, gaining experience in a dynamic and supportive academic environment.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemistry, engineering sciences, or a related field, with a strong background in inorganic or solid-state chemistry and applied materials science. Experience with imaging techniques such as X-ray tomography and electron microscopy, as well as programming skills for image analysis, is highly desirable. Proficiency in both German and English at C1 level is required.
