The Department of Soil and Environment at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala is internationally recognized for its research on soil properties, processes, and the impact of environmental changes such as climate change. The department's work spans seven subject groups, including Soil Biology, Soil Nutrient Cycling, Soil Chemistry, Agricultural Water Management, Soil and Environmental Physics, Soil Mechanics and Soil Management, and Biogeochemistry of Forest Soils. This PhD position focuses on Agricultural Water Management, specifically the role of drainage and soil health in sustainable food production and water resource management under changing climate conditions. The project aims to address the challenges posed by aging drainage infrastructure in Sweden, where 43% of arable land depends on these systems. With shifting precipitation patterns, the need for innovative solutions in drainage and soil health is critical for climate-resilient cropping systems.
The doctoral project will involve field sampling and modelling of soil physical and hydrological processes in agricultural landscapes. It is part of a strategic initiative in Agricultural Water Management at the department, linked to ongoing and new research on agricultural 'green-blue infrastructure' funded by MISTRA. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with researchers, environmental analysts, and system engineers, and will have opportunities to build a broad network through national and international research collaborations.
Applicants should have a Master of Science (MSc) or equivalent in hydrology, soil science, engineering (soil-water-environment), physical geography, or related fields. Experience in measurements and/or modelling in soil-water-plant systems, especially hydromechanics, is a merit. Skills in data management, GIS, statistics, and programming are advantageous. Candidates must be able to work independently and in teams, communicate fluently in English, and hold a valid driving license (B). Non-Swedish citizens must provide a copy of their passport. Selection is based on written application, CV, degree project, degree certificates, transcripts, two references, and English proficiency.
