About this position
This PhD position at KU Leuven offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in the domain of artificial intelligence and signal processing algorithms for EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCI). The successful candidate will join the STADIUS research division, led by Prof. A. Bertrand, within the Electrical Engineering Department (ESAT). STADIUS is renowned for its interdisciplinary approach, focusing on advanced mathematical modeling and the development of improved digital control and signal processing systems.
The project centers on identifying the temporal encoding of realistic video footage in electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, leveraging machine learning and signal processing methods. The research will involve machine learning for image processing, processing and decoding EEG signals, and EEG data collection. The aim is to advance 'natural' BCI systems, which have significant implications for neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and AI-driven signal analysis.
Applicants should possess a master's degree in engineering, with backgrounds in electrical or mathematical engineering, biomedical engineering, information technology, artificial intelligence, or signal processing. A strong mathematically-oriented foundation, genuine interest in signal processing and machine learning, and excellent academic performance in relevant courses are essential. Candidates should demonstrate independent research capabilities, a critical mindset, and proficiency in English (both spoken and written).
The position is fully funded for four years, offering a competitive salary, affiliation with KU Leuven, and opportunities to participate in international conferences and collaborations. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, fostering innovation and collaboration across fields such as computer vision, biomedical engineering, and electrical engineering.
KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, providing a respectful and socially safe environment for all researchers. The university encourages early applications and reserves the right to close the position if a suitable candidate is found before the deadline.
To apply, candidates should submit a motivation letter (including two required paragraphs), a curriculum vitae, and the names and contact information of two references via the KU Leuven application portal. For questions about accessibility or support, applicants are invited to contact the university directly.
Application deadline: 29 May 2026. Early applications are encouraged.
