About this position

This PhD position at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem focuses on the dynamic processes of air-sea interaction, specifically the role of the sea breeze in modulating oceanic circulation and air-sea fluxes. Hosted at the Edmond J. Safra Campus within the Institute of Earth Sciences, the project leverages state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and a vibrant academic environment. The research will investigate how the sea breeze, a dominant circulation pattern along coastal regions, interacts with oceanic processes, with particular attention to resonant interactions with inertial oceanic oscillations near 30° latitude. The project combines advanced numerical modeling (including large eddy simulations and coupled air-sea models) with extensive observational fieldwork, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of these phenomena. The successful candidate will join the Physical Oceanography in Multiple Scales (POMS) Lab led by Dr. Aviv Solodoch, a Senior Lecturer whose research spans boundary current instability, vortex dynamics, density currents, and air-sea interactions. The lab employs both innovative instrumentation and computational approaches to study physical ocean processes. The position offers an annual stipend ranging from 22,500 to 33,800 USD, depending on qualifications. Applicants should have a strong quantitative background in mathematical and numerical modeling, a solid foundation in oceanic and atmospheric physics, and an interest in field observations and data analysis. The university fosters a diverse and inclusive academic community, welcoming students from around the world. To apply, candidates must submit a letter of motivation, CV (with publications), and proof of academic degrees as separate PDFs via the provided application link. The application deadline is December 16, 2025. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a globally recognized research institution, offering a stimulating environment for scientific growth and professional development in the heart of Jerusalem.
