The University of Eastern Finland is offering a fully funded PhD position for a Doctoral Researcher in the field of Aqueous Binder Development and Aqueous Processing of Ni-rich Cathode Materials for Lithium-ion Batteries. The position is based at the Department of Technical Physics, Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, on the Kuopio campus. The research focuses on developing advanced aqueous-based binders and integrating them into sustainable processing routes for high-performance lithium-ion battery cathodes. The project combines materials chemistry, formulation, interfacial analysis, and electrochemical characterization, aiming to improve both battery performance and the sustainability of battery manufacturing and recycling.

The successful candidate will conduct research on binder chemistry, electrode fabrication, and material recovery, utilizing advanced characterization techniques. The role includes collaboration with university colleagues, industry partners, and other research groups, as well as dissemination of results through publications and conferences. The position is fixed-term for three years, starting from 1 April 2026 or as agreed, with a competitive salary and comprehensive staff benefits.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering, electrochemistry, or a related field, and demonstrate proficiency in English. Strong hands-on experience in material characterization and data analysis is required.
