Texas Christian University (TCU) is recruiting a PhD student for Fall 2026 / Spring 2027 in the Department of Computer Science.

The position is with Afia Anjum, who is joining TCU as an Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and next-generation wireless communication, with an emphasis on secure, interpretable, and real-time communication frameworks for cyber-physical systems.

Research topics mentioned include semantic communication, communication security, explainable AI (XAI), deep reinforcement learning (DRL), large language models (LLMs), vision-language models (VLMs), and next-generation wireless network architecture. Application domains include Internet of Vehicles (IoV), Internet of Things (IoT), smart grid / energy systems, and autonomous vehicles.

The PhD opening is for one highly motivated student. The admitted student will receive full funding through research or teaching assistantships, including tuition and stipend.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; solid Python programming skills; foundational knowledge of computer networks and machine learning; familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow; strong analytical thinking; willingness to learn independently; and good written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred qualifications include first-author peer-reviewed publications, experience with deep learning frameworks, DRL, LLMs, VLMs, or transformer-based architectures, hands-on experience with ns-2/ns-3 or OMNeT++ network simulators, background in cybersecurity and wireless communications, a master’s degree in a related field, C/C++ programming experience, and GRE scores.
