About this position

The University of Ljubljana is offering two fully funded PhD positions at the European Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence for Digital Humanities (AI4DH), located within the Faculty of Computer and Information Science. These positions are part of the ELEXAI (European Lexicographic Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence) project, focusing on the development of large language models and agentic interfaces for multilingual knowledge management using high-quality lexicographic resources.

AI4DH is a vibrant research centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence research that supports social sciences and humanities. The centre provides support and services to enhance AI literacy among SSH scholars and assists them in developing projects, especially within the Horizon Europe framework. The PhD positions offer opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary research, develop agentic systems, natural language processing tools, and contribute to digital lexicography, semantic data production, and generative model interpretation.

Work assignments include research in AI for digital humanities, supporting DH scholars, problem-solving, and collaboration with experts from various disciplines. Optional teaching opportunities are available for an additional fee. The research focus areas are agentic systems, digital lexicography, NLP tools, and generative language model explanation. The faculty hosts over 150 researchers in AI-related fields and provides access to powerful computing facilities, including the EU EuroHPC supercomputer Vega 2 and the Slovene AI Factory. Collaboration with international and interdisciplinary teams from other UL faculties is encouraged.

Benefits include flexible working hours, funds for equipment, conference attendance, tuition fee coverage for the PhD program, a modern working environment, parking, supportive colleagues, workplace recreation, regular performance-based bonuses, and opportunities for part-time/additional employment. The doctoral study is funded for up to 3 years, with possible extension within other research projects. The starting gross monthly salary is EUR 3,549 (approx. EUR 2,200 net), with daily food allowance, biannual holiday allowance, travel reimbursement, and performance bonuses.

Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in computer science, informatics, or a related technical field, or from social sciences with technical background. Candidates should demonstrate innovation, teamwork, communication, organisational skills, data analysis, programming, and fluency in English. Interdisciplinary experience in digital humanities, computational linguistics, digital lexicography, digital history, and related fields is preferred. Application documents include the AI4DH application form, motivation letter, academic CV, original master’s degree (or university diploma) in English or with English translation, and optionally up to 3 recommendation letters.

The application deadline is 22 May 2026. Interviews will be held in early June, and the start date is from September 2026 (upon agreement). For more information, visit the call page or contact Prof. Dr. Antoine Doucet and Prof. Dr. Marko Robnik-Šikonja. Information sessions are available by registration via email.

To apply, submit all documents by email in PDF format to [email protected] with [email protected] and [email protected] in CC, using the subject line 'AI4DH researcher application Name Surname'.
