About this position

Karlstad University invites applications for a PhD position in biology with a focus on plant ecology. The project addresses key questions in ecology and conservation biology, particularly the loss of biodiversity and the potential of ecological restoration to counteract current extinction trends. Special emphasis is placed on non-forest ecosystems, which host a disproportionately large share of red-listed plant species, with a particular focus on Swedish peatlands. These ecosystems serve as important carbon sinks and habitats for highly specialized biodiversity.

The main aim of the project is to identify ecological and environmental factors influencing the recovery of rare species in restored landscapes. The research will employ a multi-scale approach, combining broad analyses of species diversity and distribution with targeted case studies to uncover mechanisms behind species survival and re-establishment. The project will also examine how species traits, local habitat conditions, and landscape context affect restoration outcomes, aiming to improve measures for species at high risk of extinction.

Research will integrate field-based and analytical methods and be conducted in close collaboration with practitioners in nature conservation and restoration, ensuring a strong link between research and application. As a doctoral student, you will join an active research environment at Karlstad University, collaborating with researchers in vegetation ecology and applied environmental science, including the River Ecology and Management research group (NRRV), as well as external partners. You will receive interdisciplinary supervision in biology and geomatics and work with stakeholders to contribute to the development of knowledge-based and adaptive restoration strategies.

The project combines ecological theory with applied conservation and offers the opportunity to influence the research direction based on your interests, such as plant ecology, restoration ecology, conservation biology, or quantitative and spatial analysis. The doctoral program comprises 240 ECTS credits for a PhD and 120 ECTS credits for a licentiate degree, with studies conducted alongside paid work, providing a strong foundation for a future academic career. You are expected to work independently and contribute to the subject and institution's activities and development. Teaching and administrative duties may be included, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Eligibility requires a master's degree or equivalent, with at least 120 ECTS credits in biology including a project thesis. Strong quantitative skills, experience in plant identification, fieldwork, handling and analyzing herbarium material and ecological data, and proficiency in English are valued. Applicants should submit a personal letter, CV, degree certificate, transcript, master's thesis, publications, recommendation letters, and two references. Foreign degree holders must provide diploma and subject lists, plus contact info for degree verification.

The position is a fixed-term employment for four years full-time, extendable up to five years if teaching or administrative duties are included. Salary follows the local collective agreement. The application deadline is June 2, 2026. For further information, contact Bianca Ott Andrade ([email protected]).

Apply online via the university's Varbi recruitment portal. Ensure your application is complete and includes all required documents. Karlstad University is committed to equality, diversity, and a democratic approach, and offers a stimulating academic environment with excellent conditions for researchers.
