PhD Position in Cancer Biology, Physiology, and Neuroscience at Champalimaud Foundation (International Cancer Doctoral Programme) Champalimaud Foundation in Portugal

The Champalimaud Foundation in Portugal is inviting applications for its International Cancer Doctoral Programme (ICDP), a fully funded PhD programme designed for talented students interested in cancer biology, physiology, neuroscience, and related fields. The programme is hosted at the Champalimaud Research Centre, a leading European research institute known for its multidisciplinary and international environment. The ICDP is a collaboration between Champalimaud Research, the Medical and Biomedical Science School of Algarve University, and ITQB NOVA, offering students access to a diverse faculty and cutting-edge research labs.

Students in the ICDP benefit from a unique structure: during the first semester, they rotate through three different labs, including the Stem Cell and Regeneration Lab led by Principal Investigator Christa Rhiner, before selecting their dissertation advisor. The curriculum provides broad training in the molecular, cellular, and clinical basis of physiology and cancer, with exposure to neuroscience, immunology, and stem cell research. The official language of the programme is English, and the environment is highly supportive, inclusive, and collaborative, with a strong emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, and leadership.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or a 4+ year undergraduate degree by the programme start date, with a background in biological sciences, medicine, bioengineering, or related fields. High proficiency in English is required. The selection process includes evaluation of the CV, motivation letter, and recommendation letters, followed by interviews for shortlisted candidates. The application window is open from 5 January 2026 to 1 March 2026, with classes starting in September 2026.

Funding is comprehensive: each PhD student receives a fully funded position for up to 5.5 years, including a monthly stipend (starting at €1,484 and increasing to €1,669), annual tuition and academic fees, an installation fee for relocation, €1,400 for a laptop, coverage for an annual trip home, and comprehensive health insurance. The programme also offers a vibrant academic and social environment, with weekly seminars, workshops, and an active PhD student community.
