About this position
The University of Basel invites applications for a PhD position in cancer immunology, focusing on the role of neutrophil states in anti-tumor immunity and therapy response. The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary research program investigating the mechanisms by which innate immune cells, particularly neutrophils, regulate the tumor microenvironment. Neutrophils are increasingly recognized as key players capable of both promoting and suppressing anti-tumor immunity, yet their developmental origin, plasticity, and regulatory mechanisms remain poorly understood.
This project aims to dissect the transcriptional, epigenetic, and metabolic programs that drive antitumoral neutrophil states. The PhD student will investigate neutrophil ontogeny and plasticity using murine tumor models and human patient samples, apply state-of-the-art single-cell multi-omics, and functionally dissect key regulatory pathways. The research will also analyze immune cell interactions, with a particular focus on neutrophil–T cell crosstalk, and integrate experimental and computational approaches to uncover mechanisms of therapy response and resistance.
The overall goal is to identify novel therapeutic strategies to harness beneficial neutrophil states in cancer immunotherapy. The lab has a strong publication record in high-impact journals, including Nature Reviews Cancer, Nature Communications, Science Translational Medicine, and the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer.
Applicants should have a strong background in biological sciences, immunology, or related fields. Experience with experimental and computational approaches is desirable. A relevant MSc degree or equivalent is required, and proficiency in English is expected. Prior experience with murine models, single-cell multi-omics, or cancer research is advantageous but not mandatory.
To apply, submit your application via the University of Basel job portal. Prepare your CV, cover letter, and relevant academic documents. The position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative environment, contributing to cutting-edge research in cancer immunology.
