About this position

The Catalysis Engineering Group at the University of Amsterdam, led by Dr. Shiju Raveendran, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the efficient conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels. This research is part of the HyCARB project and aims to develop innovative, heat-stable solid catalysts with engineered active sites to advance sustainable chemical technologies.

As a PhD candidate, you will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, and materials scientists. Your primary responsibilities will include synthesizing novel catalytic materials, conducting experiments in flow and batch reactors to assess catalyst performance and durability, and characterizing materials using advanced techniques. You will optimize reaction conditions, explore scale-up potential, and contribute to the documentation, publication, and presentation of research findings. Collaboration within the Catalysis Engineering Group and with external partners is encouraged, and you will also assist with educational and organizational activities within the group and institute.

The Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) at the University of Amsterdam is internationally recognized for its research in chemistry and molecular sciences. The Faculty of Science offers a vibrant academic environment with state-of-the-art facilities and a strong emphasis on both curiosity-driven and application-driven research. The Catalysis Engineering Group is dedicated to developing sustainable chemical processes and products, with current research topics including chemical recycling of waste, CO2 conversion, sustainable fuels, and renewable hydrogen.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Experience in heterogeneous catalysis, nanomaterials synthesis, and material characterization (e.g., XRD) is desirable. Proficiency in data analysis and documentation tools (Excel, Origin), strong scientific writing and communication skills, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams are required. A proactive, creative, and critical approach to research, as well as a passion for sustainability and scientific innovation, are essential.

Funding and Benefits: The position offers a temporary contract for 38 hours per week over four years, with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end allowance. Additional benefits include paid leave, professional development courses, pension contributions, and the possibility of a favourable tax agreement (30% ruling) for non-Dutch applicants.
