About this position
Karolinska Institutet is recruiting a PhD student in chromosome biology to join the research group of Kristian Jeppsson. The project focuses on how SMC complexes, especially Smc5/6, fold chromosomes into loops and regulate the three-dimensional structure of chromosomes in the budding yeast model organism.
The doctoral project will be carried out at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) in the Biomedicum building on the Solna campus, with links to the Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at The University of Tokyo. The student may also benefit from the UTokyo-KI LINK programme and research visits to Tokyo, supporting international collaboration and training.
Research methods mentioned include Micro-C, ChIP-seq, advanced microscopy, DNA sequencing, DNA library preparation, RNA-seq, and computational analysis of sequencing data. The role includes active participation in experimental planning, execution, data analysis, scientific communication, doctoral courses, seminars, and conference presentations.
Eligibility: a master’s degree or equivalent advanced-level qualification is required, together with English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6. The ideal applicant should have strong motivation for molecular biology research, solid wet-lab experience, and the ability to work well in a team. Experience with chromosome structure, SMC complexes, sequencing workflows, microbiology, and bioinformatics is considered meritorious.
Funding: this is a salaried doctoral studentship at Karolinska Institutet, offered for up to 4 years full-time.
Application deadline: 2026-08-02. Apply via the Varbi recruitment system and include a personal letter, CV, degree projects/publications if any, eligibility documents, and other supporting materials.
