About this position
The Computational Mechanics Group at ETH Zürich’s Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on computational mechanics, specifically the fracture modeling of elastomers using phase-field approaches. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team led by Dr.
Pietro Carrara and contribute to the SOFRA(CT) project, which aims to develop advanced models for the fracture behavior of polymeric rubbers based on experimental evidence. The project involves both theoretical and numerical studies, utilizing high-performance computing (HPC) libraries and collaborating closely with experimental researchers. The PhD student will be responsible for developing new computational models to reproduce and predict experimental results, working alongside another PhD student who focuses on experimental aspects. This interdisciplinary environment offers opportunities to gain expertise in computational technologies, experimental mechanics, and scientific collaboration.
ETH Zürich provides a supportive and inclusive workplace, with benefits such as public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension schemes. Applicants should hold a recently obtained master’s degree in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics with excellent grades, and possess strong knowledge of continuum mechanics, finite element analysis, and coding skills (Python, C/C++, or Fortran).
Experience with fracture or phase-field modeling, the deal.ii library, and/or experimental testing is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated, able to work independently and in teams, and interested in scientific collaboration. Applications must be submitted online and include a CV, transcripts, a motivation letter, and contact details for at least two referees.
The review of applications begins December 1, 2025 and continues until the position is filled. ETH Zürich is renowned for its excellence in science and technology, fostering an environment that values diversity, sustainability, and professional development.
