About this position

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Campus Odense, is offering a fully funded PhD position in Computer Science, with a focus on data mining and machine learning for computational biology. This opportunity is supported by a major research grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation and is situated within the Data Science & Statistics section of the department.

The successful candidate will work under the primary supervision of Professor Ricardo J. G. B. Campello and will collaborate closely with other PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and international partners, particularly the Institute for Computational Genomics at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. The project may involve research visits to Aachen, fostering a dynamic and international research environment.

Research activities will center on developing advanced algorithms and methods for analyzing very high-dimensional datasets, typical in computational biology and bioinformatics. The work will include algorithm development, model selection (potentially with visual aids), integration of domain knowledge into general algorithms, and extensive benchmarking using both synthetic and real-world datasets. The candidate will also contribute to the development of software tools for public distribution, compatible with popular data analysis packages.

Eligibility: Applicants must have (or be about to complete) a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Computational Statistics, Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field. Essential skills include advanced programming and fluency in English. Desirable qualifications are fluency in Python, experience in algorithm design, machine learning, data analysis, and biological data analysis. Candidates nearing MSc completion should provide a supervisor’s statement regarding their expected graduation.

The position is fully funded for three years, with a competitive salary and follows the PhD study program at the Faculty of Science. The anticipated start date is February 2026, with some flexibility possible. The application deadline is 14 December 2025 (23:59 Danish time).
