About this position

The Institute of Material and Process Design at Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon GmbH is offering a PhD position focused on dissimilar laser beam welding and time-resolved phase transformation investigation using high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The successful candidate will join an international research team to explore the physical mechanisms governing laser welding of dissimilar metallic materials. The research combines advanced laser processing, comprehensive materials characterization, and in-situ synchrotron diffraction methods to reveal phase transformations, residual stress evolution, and microstructure development during welding.

Key responsibilities include designing and developing experimental setups for laser welding, executing welding experiments with high-power laser systems, and conducting time-resolved high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments at synchrotron facilities such as DESY Hamburg. The project also involves post-weld microstructural and mechanical characterization (SEM, EBSD, hardness, tensile/fatigue testing), residual stress analysis, and the development of numerical and multi-scale simulation models using commercial software like ABAQUS. Collaboration with project partners, participation in meetings, workshops, and international conferences, and preparation of scientific publications are integral parts of the role.

The position is initially for two years and offers the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree within a dynamic and interdisciplinary scientific environment.
