About this position

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), a member of the Leibniz Association, is internationally recognized for its research in aerosol and cloud science. TROPOS is offering a funded PhD position as part of the DFG-supported project “Aerosol-radiative forcing associated with fire-driven dust emissions in a changing environment.” This opportunity is ideal for early career scientists interested in the role of dust in the Earth system, combining model development with the investigation of dust impacts on atmospheric processes.

The successful candidate will focus on advancing the dust module within the global aerosol-atmosphere model ICON-HAM, performing and evaluating numerical simulations, and quantifying the radiative forcing of mineral dust aerosols. The research will address how environmental changes influence fire-driven dust emissions and their broader effects on climate and atmospheric composition.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric physics, or a closely related field. Experience in atmospheric modelling, strong programming skills, and proficiency with UNIX/Linux-based computing environments are highly valued. Excellent English communication skills and a passion for interdisciplinary research are desirable. The position is part-time (75%, 30 hours/week) and offers remuneration according to TV-L pay group 13, including attractive social benefits typical of the German public sector.

TROPOS provides a supportive, interdisciplinary environment with flexible working hours, family-friendly policies, and daycare options. The institute is committed to equal opportunity and diversity, actively encouraging female candidates and individuals with disabilities to apply. The employment term is fixed for three years, from 1st July 2026 to 30th June 2029.

To apply, submit your complete application (including references) as a single PDF by email to [email protected] by 15th May 2026. For inquiries, contact Kerstin Schepanski at [email protected]. More information about TROPOS and its research can be found at www.tropos.de. The direct application link is here.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on dust aerosols, climate interactions, and environmental change within a leading German research institute.
