About this position

The INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials, in collaboration with Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, is seeking a motivated PhD student to join Professor Volker Presser's research group. The position focuses on continuous lithium-ion extraction using advanced electrochemical methods, including redox-flow battery desalination, selective membranes, and the development of ion-selective electrode materials. Research will contribute to the fields of materials science, chemistry, and energy materials, with a strong emphasis on nanomaterials and sustainable ion recovery technologies.

Key research activities include the synthesis and characterization of electrochemically ion-selective electrode materials (such as lithium-iron phosphate and lithium superionic conductors), operation and optimization of electrochemical desalination cells, and performance benchmarking. The successful candidate will lead experimental work, data analysis, and publication efforts, while collaborating with both academic and industry partners in an international, multidisciplinary environment.

Applicants should possess an M.Sc. in chemistry, materials science, energy materials, or a related field, with hands-on experience in desalination technologies, ion separation, electrochemical methods, and material characterization. Strong communication and writing skills in English are essential, and knowledge of German is highly beneficial. The position offers a dynamic research environment, opportunities for international collaboration, and support for high-quality research dissemination.

The role is funded at salary level E13 TV-L 60% (with potential for increase), with a three-year contract and possible extension. The PhD student will graduate from Saarland University and benefit from a comprehensive package including flexible working hours, mobile working, and a company pension scheme. The INM is committed to equal opportunity and work-life balance, encouraging applications from women and individuals with disabilities.

Applications must be submitted online by January 31st, 2026, including a CV, publication list, motivation letter, and at least two reference letters. For more information, visit the provided links or contact the institute directly.
