Description

This PhD opportunity at Polytechnique Montréal, in collaboration with Université de Montréal and the Centre de recherche Azrieli du CHU Sainte-Justine, is focused on developing an 'Epilepsy-on-a-Chip' platform. The project integrates neuroscience, neurosurgery, biomedical engineering, and organ-on-chip technologies to model epilepsy using patient-specific cells and microphysiological systems. The research aims to investigate seizure dynamics, network excitability, and therapeutic responses, with strong translational relevance for drug screening and personalized medicine.

Supervision is highly interdisciplinary, involving Dr. Houman Savoji (Associate Professor, Polytechnique Montréal), Dr. Alexander Weil, and Dr. Aris Hadjinicolaou (MD, FRCPC, CSCN (EEG)). The project offers direct access to clinical insights and unmet needs in epilepsy, training at the interface of fundamental science and translational bioengineering, and is based in Montréal—a leading hub for neuroscience and biomedical innovation.

Ideal candidates are Canadian citizens or permanent residents with backgrounds in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, bioengineering, or related fields. Applicants should be passionate, self-motivated, highly independent, and possess excellent communication skills. A strong publication record or potential for high-quality scientific output is preferred. The position provides an opportunity to work with cutting-edge organ-on-chip technologies and contribute to advancements in personalized medicine.
