About this position
The Computational Mechanics Group at ETH Zürich’s Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering is offering a fully funded PhD position in experimental mechanics, focusing on the failure of elastomers. Supported by the SOFRA(CT) project, this research aims to develop innovative experimental procedures using X-ray computed tomography (CT), digital image and volume correlation, and mechanophore additions to better understand the failure mechanisms in polymeric rubbers. The successful candidate will join Dr.
Pietro Carrara’s team, taking responsibility for designing and conducting experiments on elastomers, analyzing results with advanced digital and numerical methods, and contributing to the development of models describing observed phenomena. Collaboration with another PhD student specializing in modeling and simulation is expected, fostering an interdisciplinary research environment. The position offers opportunities to learn and apply state-of-the-art modeling and computational techniques, work closely with computational researchers, and gain experience in a fast-paced, diverse, and inclusive academic setting.
ETH Zürich provides numerous benefits, including public transport season tickets, car sharing, sports facilities, childcare, and attractive pension plans. Applicants should hold a recently obtained master’s degree in engineering, physics, or applied mathematics with excellent grades, possess strong knowledge of continuum mechanics (especially large deformations), and demonstrate excellent coding skills in Python and/or C/C++.
Experience with digital volume correlation, fracture mechanics, elastomer synthesis, phase-field modeling, and finite element modeling is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated, able to work independently and collaboratively, and interested in scientific research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Applications must be submitted online, including a CV, transcripts, a motivation letter, and contact details for at least two referees.
The review of applications begins December 1, 2025 and continues until the position is filled. For questions about the position, contact Dr. Pietro Carrara at [email protected]. ETH Zürich is a world-leading university in science and technology, committed to diversity, sustainability, and excellence in research and education.
