About this position
This PhD position at Monash University offers an exciting opportunity to join the forefront of experimental particle physics research, focusing on the study of particles containing beauty and charm quarks. The research is led by Dr Tom Hadavizadeh, a member of the LHCb collaboration at CERN, Geneva. The LHCb experiment is one of the four major experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, dedicated to probing the Standard Model of Particle Physics with world-leading sensitivity.
Recent years have seen the collection of vast datasets, enabling researchers to test the Standard Model and explore new physics phenomena. As a PhD student, you will engage in projects that involve analysing large datasets, developing advanced experimental techniques, and applying artificial intelligence to particle physics challenges. Specific research directions include measuring the production of particles with two heavy quarks to deepen our understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), developing new particle identification detectors for future upgrades of the LHCb experiment, searching for matter-antimatter differences in charm hadron decays, and creating new probes to characterise proton-proton collisions.
The position also offers opportunities to participate in hardware development and testing for the next generation of particle detectors, providing hands-on experience in experimental physics and instrumentation. The research environment is highly collaborative, with access to international networks and cutting-edge facilities at CERN.
Applicants should have a strong academic background in physics or a related discipline, with skills in data analysis, programming, and statistical methods. Experience with artificial intelligence or experimental techniques is advantageous. The position is based at Monash University, Australia, and is open to candidates interested in contributing to world-class research in particle physics.
For further details or to discuss alternative project arrangements, contact Dr Tom Hadavizadeh at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted via the Monash University postgraduate project portal. Please ensure your application highlights relevant experience and motivation for joining the LHCb collaboration.
