About this position

The Department of Physics at Umeå University in Sweden is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the development of new graphene-related materials for the sorption and separation of lanthanides and actinides. This project is part of a collaborative EU initiative (MaLaR) and involves the synthesis and chemical modification of various carbon materials, including graphene, graphene oxide, and porous carbons. The research aims to optimize these materials for high surface area and selective sorption, using environmentally friendly methods to separate lanthanides from complex waste mixtures.

The successful candidate will engage in experimental work, including material synthesis and advanced characterization techniques such as BET/DFT surface area analysis, DSC, x-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and may utilize synchrotron radiation facilities. The position is full-time for four years, with the possibility of extending to five years if teaching or departmental duties are included (up to 20%). The salary is set according to the university's established doctoral student levels.

Applicants must have a second-cycle degree or equivalent (at least 240 ECTS credits, with 60 at Master's level), and 120 ECTS credits must be in physics. Candidates with backgrounds in Chemistry, Material Science, or Physical Engineering are also eligible if they meet the credit requirements. Experience in experimental research, material synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopy is advantageous, as is prior work with lanthanides, actinides, carbon materials, or sorption properties. Strong written and spoken English skills are mandatory, and candidates should be motivated, dedicated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively.

The application process requires a cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcripts, student theses/publications, and contact information for 2-3 referees. All documents must be uploaded in PDF format via the Varbi e-recruitment system. The deadline for applications is December 1, 2025, and selected candidates will be invited for online interviews.

For further information, applicants may contact Alexander Talyzin at [email protected].
