About this position

Umeå University, one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions, is renowned for its dynamic research environment and world-leading discoveries, including the Nobel Prize-winning CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool. The Department of Physics at Umeå University is offering a full-time, four-year PhD position focused on the development of new graphene-related materials for the sorption and separation of lanthanides and actinides. This project aims to prepare advanced carbon materials, such as graphene and graphene oxide, with high surface areas through chemical modification, defect engineering, and nanoparticle addition. A key aspect of the research is the design of environmentally friendly methods for the selective sorption of lanthanides from complex waste mixtures, contributing to sustainable solutions in material science.

The successful candidate will be involved in the synthesis and characterization of these materials using techniques such as BET/DFT surface area analysis, DSC, x-ray diffraction, Raman and IR spectroscopy, and will have opportunities to utilize synchrotron radiation facilities. The project is part of a collaborative effort within the EU project MaLaR, engaging multiple research groups. Applicants should have a strong background in physics, with at least 120 ECTS credits in the subject, and a completed second-cycle degree or equivalent.

Candidates with degrees in Chemistry, Material Science, or Physical Engineering are also encouraged to apply if they meet the credit requirements. Experience in experimental research, material synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopy is advantageous, as is prior work with lanthanides, actinides, or carbon materials. Proficiency in English and motivation for research are essential.

The position offers a fixed salary according to university standards, with the possibility of extending the contract to five years if teaching or departmental duties are undertaken.
