The Department of Geosciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD candidate to join a cutting-edge research project in geothermal energy and advanced drilling technologies. The work will involve experimental research, physical modelling, and digital-twin approaches, leveraging AI-driven optimisation to enhance drillability, increase the rate of penetration, and minimise non-productive time.

Key research topics include hard-rock drilling technologies, bit wear, drilling fluid performance, and real-time, data-driven optimisation using machine learning techniques. The project is highly interdisciplinary, integrating engineering, geoscience, and data science within a collaborative research environment.

Applicants with industrial or research experience in geothermal drilling, drill bits, drilling fluids, or hard-rock environments are especially encouraged to apply. Experience with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and Python for data analysis, automation, and simulations is highly beneficial.
