About this position

Luleå University of Technology is a rapidly growing institution with world-leading expertise in several research areas. The Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering is renowned for its strong experimental and applied profile, supported by well-equipped laboratories and close collaboration with industry. The Division of Mining and Geotechnical Engineering focuses on safe, efficient, and sustainable design of underground and surface excavations, working closely with industry partners to address practical engineering challenges.

This PhD position is based within the subject area of Mining and Rock Engineering, which encompasses mining technology, rock engineering, and rock mechanics. The research project addresses the challenges faced by underground mining operations at LKAB as they progress to greater depths, where the rock mass is exposed to high in-situ stresses and dynamic disturbances, increasing the risk of seismic events and rockburst damage. The project aims to develop a mechanism-based and site-adapted framework for ground support design, emphasizing energy absorption, deformation capacity, and system-level behaviour. Research activities will integrate laboratory testing, numerical modelling, and field observations from deep underground mines, with the goal of improving support performance, developing evaluation methodologies, and optimizing support system design tailored to LKAB’s mining conditions.

As a PhD student, you will conduct field data analysis and numerical research, including the development and application of numerical models for ground support systems (such as bolts, mesh, shotcrete, and rock mass interaction), analysis and interpretation of laboratory testing results, participation in the design and evaluation of ground support systems for deep underground mining, collaboration with industry partners, and dissemination of research results through scientific publications and conferences. Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research studies, with opportunities to contribute to teaching activities.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in mining engineering, rock mechanics, geotechnical engineering, or a related field, with a background in mechanics and/or numerical modelling. Good written and verbal communication skills in English are required. Experience with numerical modelling tools (such as LS-DYNA, FEM, DEM), knowledge of underground mining and rock support systems, and experience with laboratory or field testing are considered meritorious. Personal qualities sought include the ability to collaborate within a research team, analytical and problem-solving skills, and motivation to contribute to research with industrial relevance and real-world impact.

The position is funded and limited to 4 years, with the possibility of teaching and other department duties up to 20%. Placement is in Luleå, Sweden, with a starting date according to agreement. Applications must be submitted online and include a CV, personal letter, and copies of verified diplomas from high school and universities. The closing date for applications is May 31, 2026. For further information, contact Senior Lecturer Yang Zou ([email protected]) or Professor Daniel Johansson ([email protected]).
