About this position

The Erasmus School of Economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam is offering a fully funded PhD position in Health Economics, starting 1 September 2026. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in investigating inequalities in health and healthcare, the effects of diversity and team composition on preferences and performance, and the intersections of health, behavioral, labor, and personnel economics. The project will utilize advanced microeconometric methods, analyzing both survey and linked administrative data, and offers scope for additional research topics of mutual interest between the student and supervisors.

The successful candidate will join the Health Economics group within the Department of Applied Economics, a vibrant research environment with strong policy relevance and social impact. The PhD student will also be affiliated with the Tinbergen Institute, one of Europe’s leading research institutes in economics, econometrics, and finance. Supervision will be provided by Dr. Teresa Bago d’Uva and at least one other faculty member.

Applicants should have an MPhil or Research Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, Mathematics, or Physics; those with an MSc or MA must complete one year of MPhil courses at the Tinbergen Institute. A strong academic record, advanced quantitative skills (including proficiency in R or Stata), and a valid GRE General Test score (quantitative section ≥160) are required. Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency via TOEFL (≥100) or IELTS (≥7.5), or proof of English-medium university education. Two academic reference letters are also required.

The position is fully funded, with a salary of €3,059–€3,881 per month, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, 41 days paid leave, pension scheme, parental leave, daycare support, and eligibility for the 30%-ruling for international candidates. The initial contract is for 18 months, with a total duration of 3 or 4 years depending on prior qualifications. The university offers a supportive, inclusive, and diverse working environment, with career development opportunities and work-life balance benefits.

To apply, submit your application via the Erasmus University Rotterdam vacancies portal by 15 February 2026, ensuring all required documents are included. After submitting your application, send two academic reference letters to [email protected]. For project-related questions, contact Dr. Teresa Bago d’Uva at [email protected]; for application procedure queries, contact Lindsey Pijpers at [email protected].
