Description

The Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany, is offering two PhD positions focused on the development of hierarchical X-ray imaging methods at synchrotron facilities. The research integrates computational imaging, X-ray nanoscience, and data science to pioneer new tomography techniques for multi-scale material and biological analysis. The projects are part of the ErUM-Data Project CmarT and aim to advance local adaptive tomography (LAT), a novel imaging approach that merges data across length scales to reveal hierarchical sample structures. PhD candidates will work within the X-Ray Nanoscience & X-Ray Optics Group and the Computational Imaging Group, collaborating closely with beamline scientists at PETRA III. Responsibilities include developing advanced physical models for holographic X-ray image formation, designing and implementing multi-scale reconstruction algorithms, analyzing hierarchical materials and biological samples, and publishing research results. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field, with strong skills in tomography, imaging physics, or computational modeling, and proficiency in programming. The position offers a salary at 75% of the TVöD E13 pay grade, secure public-sector employment, and access to world-class facilities and training. The doctoral degree will be granted by the University of Hamburg. Applications are accepted until the positions are filled.

Funding

The position offers a monthly salary equivalent to 75% of the TVöD E13 pay grade (Federal Government scale), with secure public-sector employment (TV-AVH). Financial supplement for Germany’s Deutschland-Ticket is provided. The position is limited to 2 years with possible extension. Full access to DESY’s career training programs and seminars is included.

How to apply

Submit your application via the DESY Online Application Portal. Required documents include a letter of motivation, CV, academic transcripts and certificates, and two letters of reference. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the positions are filled.

Requirements

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field. A solid understanding of tomography, imaging physics, or computational modeling is required. Candidates should have strong problem-solving and analytical skills, proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, C++, or MATLAB), and excellent communication skills in English. German language skills are an advantage. Willingness to work in interdisciplinary teams and engage in international collaborations is expected. Preferred attributes include interest in nanostructure characterization, data science, or high-performance computing, and experience with synchrotron or microscopy data analysis.
