About this position

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available at the CORIA Laboratory (Complexe de Recherche Interprofessionnel en Aérothermochimie), University of Rouen Normandy, France, in collaboration with CNRS and the French Space Agency (CNES). The research focuses on high-fidelity numerical modelling of flash boiling in cryogenic jets, a phenomenon critical to the design and operation of space propulsion systems. The project aims to develop and validate advanced Large Eddy Simulation (LES) frameworks for understanding two-phase flows, phase change, and non-equilibrium effects in cryogenic injectors under space-like conditions.

The successful candidate will work on cutting-edge CFD simulations using the YALES2 platform, addressing scientific challenges such as multiphase flow representation, turbulence-phase change coupling, and realistic modelling of cryogenic thermodynamic properties. The research will involve close collaboration with CNES and access to high-performance computing resources. The work plan includes literature review, model development, simulation of experimental configurations, and application to real-world space propulsion scenarios. Outcomes will contribute to the design of next-generation rocket engines and injectors.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Mechanics, Energy, or related fields, with strong skills in fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics, and CFD. Programming experience (Fortran, Python, YALES2, OpenFoam) and proficiency in English for scientific communication are required.
