PhD Position in Host-Microbe Interaction: Segmented Filamentous Bacteria Dynamics at University of Paris Cité University of Paris Cité in France

The University of Paris Cité is offering a funded PhD position in the field of Host-Microbe Interaction, focusing on the dynamics and molecular details of the Segmented Filamentous Bacteria (SFB) life-cycle. The project will be conducted in the Schnupf laboratory at the Institute Necker Enfants Malades, Paris, which specializes in the study of gut commensal SFB and their role in host health and disease.

SFB are unique bacteria that play a critical role in educating the host immune system and are associated with colonization resistance and various disease models in mice. Despite their importance, much remains unknown about their molecular structures and life-cycle due to challenges in culturing and manipulating these fastidious organisms. The lab has previously identified key surface structures and transitions, but the molecular details are still to be elucidated.

The PhD project aims to characterize the SFB surface and growth dynamics using advanced techniques such as handling germfree and SFB monocolonized mice, in vivo labeling of SFB peptidoglycan, adaptation of labeling to in vitro SFB-host cell co-culturing systems, confocal fluorescence imaging, temporal analysis of bacterial cell wall growth, heterologous protein expression and purification, immunofluorescence imaging, and cryo electron microscopy.

The position is funded with a PhD stipend (gross monthly salary of €2,300) and includes access to a subsidised canteen. The contract duration is 3 years, starting October 1, 2026, and is contingent upon successful application for a doctoral fellowship from the Infection and Microbiology Doctoral School at University of Paris Cité.

Applicants must have a Master degree or equivalent in biology or microbiology-related field, with a grade point average suitable for fellowship competitiveness. Prior experience in microbiology, host-microbe interaction, microscopy, molecular biology, cloning, and biochemistry is advantageous. Proficiency in English, scientific rigour, passion for science, good organisational and analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required.
