About this position
Aalborg University’s Department of Computer Science invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Human-Computer Interaction and Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence, focusing on collaborative AI agents in blue-collar workplaces. This three-year project, funded by NordForsk, aims to investigate how AI-driven tools can enhance communication, learning, and shared understanding among teams in real-world work environments. The successful candidate will join the Human-Centered Computing Section, a vibrant research group operating at the intersection of psychology, social sciences, computer science, and technology.
The project will combine fieldwork in actual workplace settings with the design and evaluation of interactive AI systems. Research topics include increasing shared team cognition, reducing cognitive stress, and improving team communication through collaborative AI agents. The position offers flexibility for candidates to shape the research direction according to their interests, whether they are user-centred researchers with fieldwork and data analysis experience or technically oriented candidates with expertise in AI and interactive systems development.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in computer science, human-computer interaction, interaction design, artificial intelligence, or a closely related field. Strong collaboration skills, adaptability, and excellent English communication abilities are essential. Prior research experience and a background in user-centred design and/or software development are highly valued. The selected candidate will be enrolled in the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design and will be assessed regularly in accordance with Danish ministerial regulations.
The PhD stipend is funded by the NordForsk project ‘Nordic Perspectives on Collaborative AI for Blue-collar Work’, with collaborators at the University of Tampere, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Stockholm University. Salary and employment terms follow the Danish AC collective agreement. Aalborg University offers an international, supportive research environment with campuses in Aalborg, Esbjerg, and Copenhagen.
To apply, candidates must submit an application stating their motivation and qualifications, a project description (maximum two pages), CV, and diplomas (bachelor’s and master’s degrees) via the official university vacancy portal. For further information about the project, visit the NordForsk project page or the Human-Centered Computing Section website. For questions, contact Dr. Niels van Berkel or Annemarie Davidsen at the provided email addresses.
The application deadline is March 1st, 2026, with the position available for appointment as of that date or soon thereafter. The assessment process includes shortlisting and evaluation by qualified experts. Aalborg University is committed to safety, compliance, and integrity in its hiring process.
