About this position

This PhD position at Université catholique de Louvain offers a unique opportunity to investigate the role of gravity in sensorimotor coordination, supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) and BELSPO. The research is centered on experimental data collected from 11 astronaut subjects as part of the GRIP project, with protocols conducted onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The project explores dexterous manipulation in weightlessness, focusing on rhythmic and discrete pointing movements to visual targets, active collisions, and the influence of skin moisture and friction on these tasks. Control experiments on Earth will vary body orientation relative to the vertical to assess gravity's unique impact on sensorimotor coordination.

The position is hosted at the UCLouvain ICTEAM institute and the Institute of Neuroscience, coordinated by Dr Philippe Lefèvre, an engineer and neuroscientist specializing in motor control and sensorimotor coordination. The PhD appointment is for 48 months, with a flexible start date from April 2026. Candidates should have a Master’s degree in engineering or neuroscience, strong laboratory and analytical skills, proficiency in English, and experience in programming or statistical analysis. The project encourages interdisciplinary research and technological engagement, offering a stimulating environment for experimental research.
