About this position
Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain, is renowned for its pioneering work in materials science and technology. The Laboratory Materials for Energy Conversion at Empa is offering a PhD position focused on the development of hydroborate-based all-solid-state batteries, aiming to advance sustainable energy technologies. The project centers on achieving a deep mechanistic understanding of electrochemical performance and cycling stability, with a particular emphasis on engineering interfaces between electrolyte and cathode materials.
As a PhD student, you will engage in electrolyte synthesis, detailed (electro-)chemical characterization, and advanced bulk and interfacial analysis—including the use of muon-based techniques—to identify reaction pathways and degradation mechanisms. You will also contribute to cathode formulation and processing, targeting interfacial stability and transport to enable high energy and power density in next-generation batteries.
The research is embedded in the National Competence Center for Research Muoniverse, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Muoniverse connects over 30 research teams and offers comprehensive training, exchange opportunities, and career development through its Research School. The project encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and values diversity, equity, and inclusion, actively seeking applications from female researchers and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.
Empa’s state-of-the-art battery laboratories in Dübendorf provide access to advanced synthesis and characterization infrastructure, including gloveboxes, controlled-atmosphere furnaces, high-energy ball mills, DSC-TG-MS, Raman, FT-IR, XPS, XRD, SEM, and more than 1200 battery cycling channels. You will independently carry out experiments, including muon-beamline studies, collaborate with Muoniverse partners, and disseminate your results through publications and presentations.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Experience in electrochemistry or batteries is advantageous, and excellent English skills are required. The position is part of the electrical engineering doctoral program at ETH Zurich, with a start date of July 1st, 2026 or upon agreement.
To apply, submit your application via the online portal. Prepare your CV, cover letter, and relevant academic documents. Empa is committed to fostering an inclusive research culture and believes diversity drives innovation and scientific excellence. Join Empa and Muoniverse in contributing to groundbreaking research in sustainable energy technologies!
